A Short Blog Today!

Short Blog Today!

Hello!

We were up around 7 and, as it was “my” day to go get croissants, I was ready to do my duty – but I had purchased a tarte citron last night and it had yet to be eaten – I knew the Entrecote meal would fill me up for the entire day!  So, R finished the baguette we got yesterday, and I had the tarte – it was FABULOUS, one day old or not!  And the meringues – wonderful!

This was incredible!!!

Robert had some Caltech work that he needed to do today, so it was an “off” day from most travel adventures.  I did get out by myself for a bit this morning.  I took the C3 bus to Les Halles de Paul Bocuse to have a look around.  (Paul Bocuse, from Lyon, has become the Father of French cooking.)  Truly, this place is an incredible Gourmand’s delight – I think if it is edible in France, you could probably find it there.  They also have a truffle restaurant – it’s called Passionately, Truffles!  I debated about reserving for dinner there, but seriously, folks, some of the prices are way past

astronomical!  We would like to be able to eat next

                                                                        week, too!

Les Halles de Paul Bocuse - stunning!

Just too much to see and eat!!

Most expensive chocolate in Lyon...

From Les Halles, I found (all on my own, now!) a #38 bus, which took me north up to President Roosevelt Street, as I was looking for Bernachon, reportedly the best chocolatier in Lyon.  No problem finding it, but wow – apparently, if someone wants “gold” on their dessert, this is the place to go.  The gold is tissue thin, but very costly!  I was looking at a tray of small chocolates with gold flecks on them – running on the order of 14€ – 15€ EACH!  That’s equivalent to approximately $16 - $18 PER PIECE!  Can you imagine what a box of that would run?  Decided that was entirely unnecessary – I prefer wearing my gold, not eating it!

Me at Place Bellecour!

R loved the art work on the walls!

Looking up at Fourviere in the sun!

Then it was back to the 38 and the C3 and a quick stop at Chez Jules for a baguette.  We had a lovely lunch – lots of cheese, some salami and ham.  Then R was able to finish up his Caltech work, and even get a short nap!

After that, we headed out for Place Bellecoeur, the main plaza for Lyon, and not too terribly far away!  As we got to the outside door, R suggested that if I wanted to mail my red jacket back to the U.S., I might as well get it and we could do that now.  So … grabbed my jacket, the four hand towels and two aprons I got in Montmartre, and off we went!  Problem was, the closest Post Office was only open from 9 am – 2 pm – and of course it was after 2!  Undaunted, Robert found the next closest post office – that was actually open! – and in we went!

We were able to get the French equivalent of “If-It-Fits It-Ships” box, and it is now (hopefully) on its way back to Tucson!  So much better than having to find room and schlep things.  We have always had good luck (knock wood!) with mailing things from the U.K. and France.  Not quite so lucky shipping from Spain, but that’s another story!

Me at restaurant!

Oh my ... dessert...

From there, we caught a #40 bus to Place Bellecoeur, where we found a convenient BNP Paribas bank for a stop at the ATM.  We also visited another chocolate shop – Voisin – and did put a small dent in the budget for the week – YUM!   From there, back to the apartment, stopping first at Chez Jules (yet again!) this time for a chocolate tart and a raspberry tart – they both photograph fairly well; we’ll see what they taste like!  We have made a reservation at another Indian/Pakistani restaurant for dinner tonight.  The place is called Lal Qila; we ate there twice on our last visit to Lyon.  We’re thinking also of going to the market tomorrow or Sunday for another chicken dinner…also thinking of going to Vienne, about 30 km down the road; there is a lovely Roman museum there!

More later, and much love!

Hello!

Just back from a yummy dinner at Lal Qila! – an Indian restaurant just around the corner.  Only difficulty – that I don’t remember from the last time we were here – is that this is a restaurant in France that does not serve wine!  Oh well!  Lots of sparkling water instead!  We got there just a bit after 7 pm and were actually given the table we have had before.  The other thing I didn’t remember, though (while I remembered the winding stairs going down) was the ENORMOUS chandelier taking up the center of the room almost!  (Jay, this was a chandelier that Maxine would have absolutely loved!)

LOVED the chandelier!

Samosas and Pakoras!

Excellent dinner!

Dinner was great, I am happy to report!  We started with vegetable samosas and pakoras with garlic naan, and moved on to chicken tikka and boeuf palal – the palal beef had a wonderful sauce and lots of spinach – really terrific!  At any rate, we were done with dinner fairly quickly and are now back at the apartment – where it just so happens that there is a nice bottle of Pouilly Fume as well as two wonderful looking desserts that we are going to try!  So, until next time!
