Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  Hoping that you are enjoying your feast, regardless of what the Detroit Lions do or do not do on television!  Here in France, it is definitely not a Thanksgiving kind of day!  We’re planning on doing our own Thanksgiving once we get back.

I do need to start with last night’s dinner, as we did have a very nice meal!  We’re figuring that because there are so few tourists, many of the restaurants in Carnac-Plage (where we’re staying) and in Carnac-Ville are taking their annual vacations.  Last night we went to L’Annexe where we had picked up the pizzas on Tuesday night.

This time, though, we had reservations and were the first to arrive (even though it took us a few moments to find the restaurant).  Robert decided that he would have the scallops on a skewer, and I ordered the beef on the skewer.  Both of our meals were excellent, but mine came with a lovely bleu cheese sauce for dipping purposes.  R had rice with his meal, and I had French fries.  For dessert, I had two scoops of mint sorbet with a bright blue liquid poured over the top.  R had sorbet citron with vodka (allegedly, he says).  At any rate, everything was good, and we very much enjoyed it.  We got back to the apartment about 9-ish and I went straight to bed!

Up this morning around 7-ish – I’m still having a very difficult time with the fact that we went looking for croissants and pain au chocolat this morning after 7:30 and it was still black outside!  Wow!  And, when we got out to the car, we found that it was raining very

lightly.  We found a patisserie here in Carnic-Plage, but even that was different!  R had to pay through an automated machine, which took some doing.  Back to the apartment for O.J., croissants and raspberry jam!  Finally ready to go out around 9 am.

Robert had decided yesterday that he really preferred dolmen and tumuli over menhirs, (that would be rocks marking single tombs and mounts of earth and stones raised over a grave or graves, over single standing stones, so we spent some time going over what the choices were in the immediate area.  Fortunately, many such sites were marked on our French Road Atlas, which did help with the other information we had brought.  So, off on our latest adventure to collect Neolithic locations!  I have to say that the rain had stopped entirely and for most of the morning, we had some lovely blue skies and even a bit of sunshine here and there!

We first headed a bit to the west of Carnac, in the neighborhood of Plouharnel.  Robert had prior to our trip, printed out Google maps of the places we were interested in seeing.  The problem, though, is that not all sites on the map are available for people to look at – some were in private hands.  And, some were just extremely difficult to locate!  Our first dolmen, though, was crazy – it actually physically abuts to the fence of a family living in the house next door!  I mean – really??  And, once we got a bit more familiar with what we were looking for, they actually got easier to find!  R took a great many pictures and we will post those separately.

At any rate, we drove some interesting back roads – and truthfully, Brittany is a really beautiful area in France, and we found some very nice and what looked like comfortable homes.  About 11:30 am we decided to head toward Locmariaquer (town where we visited yesterday, just not looking for sites) as they have something called the Table des Marchands that sounded interesting.  I will say, Locmariaquer is taking good care of their Neolithic sites – we found three together, all fenced in with a lot of very good information.   There was a HUGE Great Broken menhir (20.6 meters long, weighing 280 tons) that had fallen over in Neolithic times and broken into four different pieces. There was the burial mound of Er Grah and the dolmen of the Table of Marchands, which was basically a rebuilt tumulus which reminded us very much of New Grange in Ireland, as it had been meticulously reassembled so no telling if they got it right or wrong!   So, all in all, there were some interesting exhibits at the Visitor’s Center, as well as a really good film with English translations.

             My wonderful Salad!  Very filling!

After this, it was definitely time for some lunch – and we definitely wanted to be more successful today than yesterday!  So … we were starting the drive back to Carnac, when I spotted an OPEN restaurant marked: Bistrot, Pizzeria, Grill.  It sounded and looked nice, so in we went!  SO nice to be greeted kindly, and seated at a lovely table in the corner.  The menus were very interesting.  After the normal different types of pizza, they had some salads to offer.  R ended up ordering the Caesar salad, and I ordered something called the Buccini Salad.  Well – they were both GREAT!  R’s Caesar came with a breaded chicken, which smelled wonderful!!  It came with several kinds of lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, parmesan cheese and toasted croutons – he ate every bite!  My Buccini came with several kinds of lettuce, red onion, avocados, prosciutto, cherry tomatoes and a big ball of burrata cheese with pesto on it!  Fabulous!  We both were members of what Mom used to call the “clean plate club!”  For dessert, I had a Dame Blanche (vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce, Chantilly cream and gently toasted almonds) and R had Tutti-Fruitti – an amazing red sorbet with the cream and almonds on top.  Wow!  Decided that that will be it for the day, as it was past 2 pm and we knew we were not going to want dinner!

So, back to the apartment in the rain.  R is napping on the couch, and I just finished our first load of Carnac-Plage laundry.  Fortunately, this machine also has the “30-minute speed cycle” which is perfect.  So now, clothes are spread hither and yon in the apartment, and R’s jeans are hopefully toasting up nicely on the bathroom towel warmer!

More later!
