Hello!
Up this morning about 7:30 am – having slept for something like 11½ hours! I’m assuming I must have needed it! As it was my turn to get the croissants, (and Chez Jules is, thankfully, open 7 days a week) out and into the cold (something like 37 degrees) morning. Fortunately, no wind blowing! I got deux croissant and deux pain-au-chocolat for us, along with a baguette – figuring that lunch would probably be bread and cheese, of which we have a supply! Excellent breakfast, yet again!
About 9 o’clock we headed out to the farmer’s market across the Saone. This time, we decided that we would not be persuaded by all the wonderful fruits and veggies, but would stick to the dinner program – roasted chicken and roasted potatoes, along with a supply of haricots verts (green beans but better!) As those acquisitions didn’t require nearly the time it had last Sunday, and we were back in about half-an-hour. As we are getting ready to leave Lovely Lyon on Tuesday morning, there were a few things that we needed to pick up at our big Monoprix in town. Stores, at least in Lyon, are now actually being open 7 days a week! Not all of them, obviously, but unlike years gone by when it was difficult to find groceries outside of a farmer’s market on a Sunday, things are really opening up. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but it does seem to be happening. So – back on the good old (and now running again!) C3 Bus for just a couple of stops. Found everything we needed and back yet again to the apartment. We did stop at Chez Jules (yes, again!) this time for desert for tonight (an apple tartlette for R and a tart citron for me!) as well as something they’re calling “cookie americain.” (I took a picture of it; it almost looks like it wants to have M&M’s included, as there are different colors in the cookie – just no M&M’s!)
The gelato shop next to our place;
note the street light? That's our living room!Stunning Fourviere! I've always had a thing for lions; Lyon?? Side of cathedral

Robert worked on Caltech “stuff” for a while, and I was able to finish Caesar’s Conquest of Gaulle. Excellent book; that man was really a military genius…obviously not quite as good with the senators as he was with his troops…but oh well! Can’t have everything! Lunch – baguette et fromage (cheese) was wonderful!
In the afternoon, we needed to go out once again for water; we do happen to run through a fairly hefty supply for some reason. Decided to head down the street near the funiculaire to Fourviere as being the closest place. We picked up water and some cookies – and then R suggested that, as I had indicated that I wanted to walk down the hill from the cathedral, that this might be the time to do so. (He, however, opted take the bus back to the apartment.) So…I did. Carolyn, you never told me about all those STAIRS! The trip up to Fourviere went fairly quickly, and the funiculaire was really crowded. It seems to be a gathering place of many Lyon young people, but I also saw families of all sorts. I was thinking that many times families may take a walk after a large Sunday meal – this would be a great idea.

And then I started D.O.W.N.! Let me say first that, after a certain point in life, knees tend to get a bit trickier than in earlier years … I understand hips do as well, but for the moment, let me just talk about knees. Yeah … There were several suggested ways down or around from Fourviere, and I decided I should follow the path to Vieux Lyon, where we are staying. What I began to follow was a nicely paved wide trail heading down. What I wasn’t expecting, though, were stairs – in GREAT number. I do much better on pathways; stairs and I don’t always agree all the time … but at a certain point, there wasn’t really any other way around it – down those flipping steps. And down … and down. If only the photos could reflect ALL the stairs, but they don’t.

At any rate, I did make it to the bottom – but not without contemplating how I was to get to hospital from mid-staircase, if necessary. Came out on Rue de Boeuf in Vieux Lyon, and not too long after I was safely home. UGH! Lovely Sunday afternoon!
Another load of wash tonight, and then tomorrow we have decided to ride buses/trams/etc. and possibly go back up to Bouillion where we had the tremendous lunch the other day, for a repeat! Then we’ll be packing up, as Clothilde will be coming about 7:30 am on Tuesday morning, and we will be off to Brittany for a few days!
More later!
